This paper analyses the judgement of the Court of justice of 29 April 2025, that has declared contrary to the European Union’s law the Maltese legislation which offers naturalization in exchange for predetermined payments or investments, notwithstanding the absence of a genuine link of the applicants with Malta. In this context the author develops some reflections on the relationship between national citizenship and the citizenship of the European Union.
